Massive Rain Storms in Mid March Cause Wide-spread Damage
Following closely on the heels of several major snowstorms, an immense rain storm accompanied by near-hurricane force winds struck the northern New Jersey area in mid March. The Nor’easter downed hundreds of trees and power lines which triggered wide-spread power outages throughout the area as the storm contributed to what was to become the second worst flooding on record along the Passaic River in Little Falls. Several other communities along the Pequannock, Ramapo, Pompton and Saddle Rivers were also flooded displacing thousands of residents and causing major damage to homes and businesses. Travel throughout the area was difficult for several days as many roads (local as well as highways) in the region were closed until flood waters receded or trees were removed.
Northern New Jersey Chapter DAT members provided assistance at several area shelters, distributed cleanup kits, provided mass feedings throughout affected neighborhoods, performed damage assessments and offered mental health services.
As of April 4th the Northern New Jersey Chapter served 5,950 meals and 17,425 snacks and distributed 700 comfort kits, 5,223 clean-up kits and 10,689 bulk items to clients.
